Aztec Ruins National Monument & My Junior Ranger

We road-tripped to New Mexico last weekend for a fall festival and stumbled upon the Aztec Ruins National Monument. As far as national monuments go, this one was pretty awesome! Feel free to google the history for yourself, I was too busy making sure 2 children did not destroy the 800 year old ruins to study up on what I was looking at.

The cool thing was that these ruins have been really well maintained/restored and we could walk around, go inside, and touch almost everything - a kid's dream come true!
Because of this, Maia became incredibly interested in learning all about the natives that lived there, what they ate, how they lived, etc. The park ranger gave Maia a workbook and told her if she completed the tasks she could become a Junior Ranger and get a badge. Game on! Maia loves shiny things and loves being in charge even more. She took this task very seriously, made an oath, and got her badge. Not kidding, she had her Junior Ranger BOSS face on! The park ranger told her there were over 400 national monuments in the US where she could collect Junior Ranger badges. So her new goal in life is to visit all these monuments and collect those badges... Could be worse goals for a four year old I guess!

It was a pretty cool parenting moment to watch her be so interested in history and culture and to hear her ask so good questions. I guess we will start close to home and hit up Mesa Verde next!

Hasta...
